Day 4: Hope Is the First Stage of Healing

Hope Is the First Stage of Healing
“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” — Romans 15:13 (NKJV)
Before a person experiences healing, they often experience something else first: hope. Hope is the moment when a discouraged heart begins to believe that tomorrow can be better than today. It is the spark that appears in the darkness. It is the first sign that healing has already begun its work within us.
Hope is like a thermostat, not a thermometer. A thermometer simply reports the conditions of the room. If it is cold, the thermometer says it is cold. If it is hot, the thermometer says it is hot. It only measures reality as it currently exists. Many people approach healing this way. They look at symptoms, test results, pain levels, or even the opinions of well-meaning people and allow those things to determine their expectation.
But hope operates like a thermostat. A thermostat does not merely report the temperature—it changes it. It is set according to a desired outcome and then works to bring the environment into agreement with that setting. Biblical hope functions the same way. It does not deny present circumstances, but neither does it surrender to them. Hope fixes its attention on God's promises and begins expecting a different future. While symptoms may be reporting today's reality, hope is already setting the atmosphere for tomorrow's breakthrough.
Many people have lost hope because they have endured disappointment, pain, setbacks, or long battles with sickness. They have prayed prayers that seemed unanswered and waited longer than expected. Over time, discouragement can settle into the heart and whisper that nothing will ever change. But God is called the God of hope because He specializes in restoring expectation where it has been lost.
Biblical hope is far more than wishful thinking. It is a confident expectation of good based on the promises of God. It looks beyond present circumstances and fixes its attention on God's faithfulness. Hope says, "God has not forgotten me. God is still working. My story is not over." When hope is restored, faith suddenly has something to build upon.
Here is today's exciting discovery: hope is often the first stage of healing. Long before symptoms change, hope begins changing the atmosphere of the heart. Long before circumstances improve, hope begins expecting improvement. Every promise of God is designed to feed your hope and strengthen your expectation for recovery. As you fill your heart with God's Word, hope rises. As hope rises, faith follows. And as faith follows, you become increasingly positioned to receive the healing and restoration God has prepared for you. Don't let your symptoms set the temperature of your expectation. Let God's promises set the thermostat of your hope.
Prayer
Father, thank You for being the God of hope. When discouragement tries to settle into my heart, remind me of Your promises. Fill me with joy and peace as I trust in You. Restore every area where disappointment has weakened my expectation. Help me see beyond my present circumstances and focus on Your faithfulness. I choose to set my hope on Your Word rather than my symptoms. Thank You in advance for my healing, my recovery, and the good future You have prepared for me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
